Abstract: Background and Objectives: Drug abuse is considered as one of the risk factors of diseases, one of the causes of the increase in the burden of diseases, and one of the determinant indexes of health equity. Nowadays, using hookah is considered as a natural phenomenon not only in adults, but also in the youth and adolescents, which threatens the schools, as the first educational environment following the family. Since having information is required before any health planning, the present study aimed to investigate the prevalence of hookah use among the students of Shiraz.
Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 312 students of both sexes were selected through multi-stage cluster sampling. The data were gathered by referring to the schools and analyzed using descriptive statistics.
Results: In this study, 291 students (54% males) completely answered the questions. According to the results, 41.8% of the students used hookah, 33.5% had hookah users among their family members, 58% considered parks and other public places to be appropriate for using hookah, and 29.6% had experienced using hookah due to curiosity. Moreover, 30.6%, 5%, 12.3%, 8%, and 3% of the students respectively mentioned friends, father or mother, brother or sister, close relatives, and distant relatives as the first individuals offering them to use hookah. In addition, 60.3% of the students stated that they showed no resistance and used hookah time and again.
Conclusion: The study results showed the high rate of hookah use among the students. In fact, this phenomenon has become a habit for the students due to the accompaniment of the parents as well as the other relatives.
