Abstract: Background and Objectives: Aging speed is at its highest rate in developing countries. Due to the higher mean age of the population in developed countries, sufficient attention has been paid to all groups of the society. However, in Iran which has a rather young population, less attention has been paid to the elderly regarding the allocation of health and treatment services. Thus, the present study aimed to find out the epidemiology of diseases of the elderly which is needed for management and planning.

Materials and Methods: The present study was a patient survey conducted on the elderly hospitalized in Namazi hospital, Shiraz, Iran. The data of 1073 patients was obtained from the computer through systematic sampling. The data were analyzed using the SPSS statistical software and t-test as well as Chi-square test
Results: Among the 1073 patients under study, 56.7% were male. In addition, the mean age of the inpatients was 72.8+6.05 years and most of them were in the 70-74 year old age group. The patients’ mean length of hospitalization was also 6.6+7.8 months. The most common causes of the patients’ hospitalization were cardiovascular as well as neurological diseases. Besides, their most prevalent causes of death were neurological, cardiovascular, and infectious diseases. The results revealed a significant difference between the two sexes regarding the frequency of the diseases (P<0.05). However, no significant difference was found regarding the prevalence of the diseases in different seasons (P>0.05).

Conclusion: By identification of the prevalent diseases among the elderly, it is necessary to develop programs for controlling and preventing such diseases
